The recent snowfall in Colorado has come and gone, leaving the state with new record lows in terms of snowpack levels as we near the end of January.
According to the National Weather Service, some areas did receive significant snowfall since Friday. While certain mountain regions like the ones west of Crested Butte saw up to 23 inches of snow, Monarch Pass received 14 inches in some sections, and Wolf Creek Pass got around 12 inches. However, most locations only received snowfall within the lower range of the agency’s forecasts, rather than the higher end.
As of January 26, the USDA reports that Colorado’s snowpack is currently at a mere 58% of its typical levels for this time of year, with little snow expected in the near future. The next substantial snowfall is anticipated around February 10, though long-term predictions suggest this forecast may not be entirely reliable.
Presently, Colorado’s snowpack water equivalent stands at approximately 5.2 inches statewide, falling short of the previous record low for this date of 5.6 inches. The lowest recorded statewide snowpack by February 10 is 6.7 inches, making it improbable for Colorado to see a significant increase in snowpack before then.
Despite the overall low snowpack levels, there has been some recent fresh powder accumulation over the last couple of days. While no areas received double-digit snowfall amounts, various ski resorts across the state saw new snowfall between Saturday and Sunday:
